Bibiladeniye Mahanama Thero is a Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist monk, composer, music director, arranger, and producer whose work explores music as a path toward reflection, spiritual connection, and emotional well-being.
A musical practice shaped by contemplation
Born in Sri Lanka in 1989 and ordained as a monk as a child, Mahanama Thero pursued both religious study and formal music education. His training included North Indian musical traditions, guitar, vocal studies, computerized music, and sound engineering. That combination of contemplative practice and technical study became the foundation for work spanning relaxation music, songs, film scores, documentaries, conceptual musical films, and music for mental-wellness applications.
His later projects include the film score for Girivassipura, the conceptual musical films Wallstory and Piece for Peace, and music initiatives designed around meditation and emotional well-being. He also founded the Share the Love Foundation of Ceylon and the Sandhara Spiritual Buddhist Aesthetics & Arts Centre.
Share the Love: a large international production
Released in 2014, Share the Love was Mahanama Thero’s first full experimental album devoted to spirituality and relaxation. The central idea—“love the environment as thyself”—shaped a collection intended to support concentration, calm, and a closer relationship with the natural world.
The original edition contains 12 compositions and runs approximately 59 minutes. It was recorded over an extended production period that began in 2011, then released in Sri Lanka, Europe, and Asia. In 2015, Share the Love received Sri Lanka’s State Music Award for Best Album.
A broad musical ensemble
The production brought together a large group of musicians and vocalists, including guitarists John Anthony and Mohan Premathilake; violinists Dinesh Subasinghe, Dilshan Malith, Praneeth Saranga, and Chandra Thilakarathne; keyboard and piano performers Warren Van Gramberg and Senanga Dissanayake; flutists Nuwan Balasuriya and Indika Rajintha; bassist Gayan Fernando; and vocalists Nimantha Heshan, Kasun Primaal, Tharindya Amarathunga, Dumal Warnakula, Raween Kanishka, and Meena Prasadini.
Ruwan Walpola contributed natural sound design, adding environmental texture to the musical arrangements. Nick Gasmena mastered the completed album at Hit Warehouse, bringing the many instruments, voices, designed natural elements, and wide dynamics into a cohesive final listening experience.
